Infants
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends an infant’s first dental visit occur by age 1 or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Early, regular checkups (every 6 months) help prevent cavities, track development, and establish cleaning routines.
Toddlers
Toddler dental care should begin with a first dentist visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. Regular checkups are recommended every 6 months to monitor development and prevent decay. Early, consistent care, including brushing twice daily with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, is essential for healthy, cavity-free teeth.
Teens and Adults
Teenagers generally transition from pediatric to general dentistry between ages 16 and 18, though many continue with specialists until age 18-22 to monitor wisdom teeth, orthodontics, and unique adolescent development. Key care includes regular check-ups every 6 months, orthodontics, and addressing increased risks of decay.
The ideal age for teen orthodontic treatment is typically between 11 and 15 years old. During this phase, most permanent teeth have erupted and the jaw is still growing, making it easier to correct misalignments and bite issues efficiently. While initial evaluations should occur by age 7, most active treatments begin in early adolescence.
